The arrogance of Catholic Charities  from Letters to the Pilot  27 Apr 03

We have no reason to trust Catholic Charities.

Alfred A. Lagan, President, Legatus, Boston Chapter...

The action by the board, however sincere it may be, raises troubling questions for faithful Catholics....Catholic Charities represents the combined charitable works of the faithful of the Archdiocese, under the guidance and authority of the bishop. By its defiance, the board legitimizes a competing organization, the VOTF, at the expense of the Bishop. By accepting the money offered to it by the VOTF, the board gives credibility to an organization hich is trying to wrest control of the local diocese from the Bishop. Many generous Catholics annually donate far larger sums to Catholic Charities than the VOTF donation, and thousands more donate lesser amounts. These donations are not made with conditions attached but from a sincere love of the poor... Jesus admonishes His followers against the false prophets - - By their fruits you shall know them" The actions of VOTF seems directed more toward creating division in the Church as a method of gaining control. These are not steps directed toward healing and reconciliation.

About a paltry gift, Arthur McCarthy, Pomano Beach....

First, he commends Fr. Szal, then....."He attacks the arrogance of Catholic Charities for refusing the request of Bishop Lennon to decline the gift of 38,000 from the dissident and discordant group misnamed as the Voice of the Faithful. Bishop Lennon should fire the officials of the Catholic Charities who accepted the "paltry gift". He should also ban VOTF from meeting on Church property as several other bishops and pastors have done.

More on Catholic Charities, Dr. Cammile and Philip Arcidi....

Voice of the Faithful is anyting but faithful. The latest gambit - - giving money to anyone but the Bishop shows that these would-be Church leaders want to wield the power of the purse, like Congress and pre-empt the leadership of the bishop. It's a centuries old game, one played by selfish aristocrats who envied the independence of the Church. Today, the manipulators are afluent Americans who won't follow any decisions but their own. Younger Catholics, like us, can smell their hypocrisy miles away. Too bad Catholic Charities swallowed their bait.....Now, we have no reason to trust Catholic Charities..If they bucked under for a tiny fraction of their budge, who knows what they'd do for more dollars.....Dr. Doolin showed that Catholic Charities can be bought.
